Bagger 294.

With Julien Jimonet.

Our starting point was the trace generated by industry on the landscape, and our way of living today in an environment sculpted by the industrial tool, so we turned our attention to the extraction of matter.

Very quickly, an ambivalence was created between, on the one hand, a fascination for the immensity of machines and the forms of a manufactured landscape, and on the other, the finitude of resources buried in a desire for production that never ceases to grow.

We finally turned our attention to the Hambach open-cast coal mine in Germany, the industrial site responsible for the largest carbon emissions in Europe. Through an installation made of white polystyrene blocks cut and sculpted with hot wire, we project this terrain, shaped by the Bagger 294, the excavator responsible for the mine's expansion over the landscape since 1984, until the soil is exhausted in 2038.
The final surface area of the mine would be 85km2, equivalent to the surface area of Paris intramuros, excavated to a depth of over 400m.
